How being “Type A” has helped me as a parent

Category : Parent Stuff

Those of you who know me, know that I’m not Type A in everything but I think you can definitely say that I have Type A tendencies.

Prior to having a child, there were certain things that would have to be a certain way or all hell would break loose. I would (and still do!) create lists in my head of all of the things that need to get done, the order of the list based on priority, and exactly how the list items should be done. In fact, it’s calming for me to come up with a list and then execute it flawlessly.  :)

So why should anything change with parenthood?

As soon as I noticed that my son was beginning to get beyond feeding to feeding and napping regularly (around 5 months), I started browsing the web for sample schedules that might fit him. So of the try, try again vein, I worked with Felix until we finally worked out a schedule that works for him and me.  You can view a copy of the schedule here! I’ve told my husband and everyone else: stray off the schedule at your own risk (and possible face the wrath of mommy)!

Naturally, once I got the schedule down I had to then make an electronic copy of it, share it in Google Docs with Michael, and also hand a physical copy over to him so that he could tack it to his corkboard. (Oh and did I mention that I’ll be giving anyone who babysits him this same schedule? Haha.)

I think you’ll find if you read enough parent blogs, parenting books, ad nauseum, that with babies and toddlers consistency is key.

Create a schedule, see if it works, modify it, see if the new schedule works, rinse, repeat…

Until you finally get the one that works for you. Then stick to it as much as humanly possible!
